Assess & CommunicateIs the homework task clear and appropriate? It’s important to work together with your child’s teacher to ensure the homework assignments are within your child’s capabilities, and are not too easy or hard.1 |
Make TimeGive your child an appropriate amount of time to work on the task in a focused manner. Ensure they know what needs to be done in that time and be around to monitor or step in if required.2 |
Create FunTry to make the experience less of a chore and more of an exciting challenge. Perhaps you can allow them to listen to music while they work, or provide snacks or break time activities to incentivise and break up the study time.1 |
Find SpaceEnsure you child has somewhere quiet and calm to concentrate, where they can’t be distracted. A balance ball to sit on can sometimes aid focus, allowing them to move around gently while they work.2 |
Optimise & OrganiseCreate an organized system for your child to keep on top of their homework. This could involve folders for tasks that are complete and waiting to be worked on, or stationery systems so they have all the tools necessary to complete the assignment.3 |
Remember RoutineIt can be useful to create a daily schedule that encourages your child to complete the homework at the same time each day. This gets them into a routine. Note that the later in the evening it gets, the more tired they often become, so encouraging them to get the tasks done earlier may be beneficial.3 |
