Prospan contains a specific extract of Hedera helix (EA 575®), commonly known as ivy leaf. Prospan, Prospan for Children  and Prospan Menthol contain Hedera helix extract equivalent to 43.75 mg/mL dry leaf. Ivy leaf has a long history of use. Learn more about ivy leaf.

Does Prospan have any side effects?

It is important to speak with your healthcare professional if you are concerned about possible side effects. In very rare cases allergic reactions such as shortness of breath or skin reactions may occur after taking medicines containing ivy. In sensitive patients gastrointestinal complains such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may occur. 

Prospan, Prospan for Children and Prospan Menthol contain sorbitol. Products containing sorbitol may have a laxative effect or cause diarrhoea.

 

Is Prospan likely to interact with any other medicine?

Prospan is well tolerated and there are no known interactions between Prospan, Prospan for Children, Prospan Menthol and other medicines.

My children refuse to take cough mixture because of the taste, will this be the same?

Prospan for Children has a natural cherry flavour.

 

Can I give Prospan to children?

Prospan and Prospan for Children are well tolerated by children. See packaging for appropriate children’s dosing. However Prospan and Prospan for Children should not be given to infants under two years of age without medical advice.

Does it contain gluten, dairy, colourants or sugar?

No, Prospan, Prospan for Children and Prospan Menthol have no added gluten, dairy, sugar or colours.

Does Prospan contain alcohol?

Prospan, Prospan for Children and Prospan Menthol do not contain alcohol.
 

 

Can Prospan be used during pregnancy?

Prospan is not recommended to be used during pregnancy or lactation. Please see your healthcare professional for further advice.

Although there are no known adverse effects of Prospan in women who are pregnant or are breastfeeding, there are no studies performed on pregnant women and those who breastfeed with use of Prospan. 

Will Prospan affect the ability to drive and operate machinery?

Prospan does not cause drowsiness and is not expected to affect your ability to drive a motor vehicle or operating heavy machinery.
