What is Silybum marianum?
More commonly known as milk thistle, extracts from the fruit of the Silybum marianum plant have been linked with liver health.
The history of Silybum marianum use
Silybum marianum is a thorny plant that has been used for more than 2,000 years to help health concerns related to the liver. Historically, in some parts of the world, the plant’s leaves, roots and stems were eaten raw, toasted and/or boiled. Silybum marianum originates from Europe but is now found throughout the world.
The prickly leaves of Silybum marianum contain splashes of white, which were historically referred to as ‘Mother Mary’s milk’ - hence its common nickname, milk thistle. It’s also known as Holy Thistle, or St Mary’s Thistle, Scottish thistle and Wild Artichoke.
The specific extract used by Flordis
Modern milk thistle extracts are produced from the fruit of the plant which are then often standardised to the amount of silymarin they contain. The specific Silybum marianum extract used by Flordis is known as MZ 80. This is manufactured in Germany using a series of strict controls that are applied to help ensure that every product is consistent (we refer to this as “batch-to-batch consistency”).
Silymarin is generally understood to be poorly absorbed in the intestine; however, Flordis has formulated the MZ 80 extract to efficiently release silibinin – believed to be the most beneficial component of silymarin.1 This individual and highly technical process, supported by the success of many clinical trials, helps ensure a consistent form and amount of MZ 80 in every batch - meaning each final product will contain the same high quality active ingredient.
In order to avoid variation between batches of extracts, Flordis has rigorous protocols in place which ensure the highest standard of end product from one batch to another.
There is substantial variation in the production of natural medicines. Flordis believes that the true health benefits of natural medicines lies in the science behind the growing, harvesting, and processing. Flordis pays careful attention to the plant species and growing methods, using precise processes to help produce consistent crops. This process then continues by extracting and manufacturing specific ingredients following a series of strict controls to help deliver a consistent medicine across batches.
The medicine that you receive is the same specific natural medicine that is tested in clinical trials.
