Valerian offinalis and Humulus lupulus (Valerian and Hops)

What are Valerian and Hops?

Valerian (Valerian offinalis) grows wild in forests, along river banks and on wet meadows throughout Germany. It is a tall upright perennial, to 1.5m with beautiful scented small reddish or white blossoms. Both the rhizome and roots are used in making medicinal extracts.

Hops (Humuls lupulus) is a species of flowering plant native to Europe, Western Asia and North America. It is a perennial, herbaceous, climbing plant which sends up new shoots in early spring and dies back to a cold-hardy rhizome in autumn.

Valerian and Hops can be found in Flordis’ ReDormin products.

The history of Valeriana offinalis and Humulus lupulus use

Both valerian and hops have long traditions of helping with insomnia and sleeplessness.

The use of Valeriana officinalis for insomnia stems from Ancient Greece, where it was known as 'phu' - a reference to the offensive odour of the roots. The Latin term valere, from which the common name Valerian originates, means "to be strong, be well”. Traditional medicine across different cultures has used the strobiles of female Humulus lupulus to treat insomnia for centuries.

The specific extract used by Flordis

The specific extract of Valeriana officinalis and Humulus lupulus used by Flordis is known as Ze 91019.

Flordis believes it’s the science behind growing, harvesting and processing that delivers the true health benefits of natural medicine. Ze 91019 is extracted and formulated using a proven process. This individual and highly technical process ensures a consistent form and amount of Ze 91019 is used in every formulation - meaning each final product will contain the same high-quality active ingredient.

Flordis’ ReDormin contains the specific extract that is used in clinical trials. Our careful control of the growth, harvesting and manufacturing of our natural medicines are designed to reduce variability and ensure consistency between products.

Ze 91019 has been well researched and has demonstrated good results in clinical trials and other scientific research.

In an observational study, three times more patients slept through at night without waking, or woke only once, after taking Ze 91019 for 4-6 weeks.4

Valerian and Hops: from seed to patient

The specific extract Ze 91019 contains extracts of valerian and hops made in Switzerland.  The process of manufacture is as follows:

  • The specific species of herb is selected
  • Standardised cultivation and harvesting occurs (helping to ensure a consistent phytochemical profile) - followed by harvesting, drying and processing
  • A series of strict controls are applied to the manufacturing processes - including everything from solvents and extraction methods through to packaging, storage and transportation of the final product - helping to ensure that every single product is consistent (we refer to this as “batch to batch consistency”)
  • Research and clinical studies are conducted on the finished product to validate its effect on positive health outcomes and tolerability

How it works

Ze 91019 appears to act by helping work with the systems in the body that help you get to sleep and help keep you asleep through the night.  Research suggests that Ze91019 does this by positively affecting the two body systems that regulate sleep: the circadian rhythm, which regulates our sleep and wake times, and the homeostatic process, which tells us exactly when it’s time for sleep and helps us maintain sleep throughout the night.1,2

Key studies on Ze 91019

Ze 91019 has been studied for a decade in many clinical trials and scientific research. Research has suggested Ze 91019 is associated with the following benefits:

  • Helping to support better sleep quality in a randomised placebo-controlled trial of 30 adults.3 Four out of 5 patients reported waking refreshed after 2 weeks of taking Ze 91019 - and this effect was noticed for a further 4 weeks.3
  • Three times more patients slept through at night without waking, or woke only once, after taking Ze 91019 for 4-6 weeks.4 Patients took significantly less time to fall asleep when taking Ze 91019 compared to placebo.5
