DONA Glucosamine
Glucosamine Sulphate is a naturally occuring amino sugar necessary for the synthesis of connective tissue.
Glucosamine is one of the building blocks of proteoglycans, the ground substance of articular cartilage which functions to attract water into the joint space for lubrication of the cartilage during movement.
DONA Glucosamine works by maintaining joint health and lubricating and rebuilding cartilage that has been worn away by age progression or injury. In addition, it specifically reduces the structural degradation seen in the osteoarthritic joint.
Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, patients should consult their healthcare professional.
Why take DONA Glucosamine?
DONA Glucosamine is successfully used to help alleviate symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, spine and hands. It acts on both the signs and symptoms, helps in the synthesis of new cartilage and reduces the breakdown of existing cartilage, thereby reducing inflammation. Treatment with DONA Glucosamine has been specifically clinically proven to improve joint mobility and relieve pain, as well as reduce swelling and tenderness. DONA has been shown to rebuild damaged cartilage, thus restoring articular function. DONA Glucosamine therefore nourishes the joint, without the gut side effects common with synthetic medicine alternatives.

Lifestyle modifications for Osteoarthritis
Weight reduction lessens the burden placed on lower extremity joints such as hips and knees. Excess weight increases the load placed on these joints, which can speed up the breakdown of cartilage. A diet rich in whole foods which exert anti-inflammatory effects such as green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, legumes and oily fish containing Omega 3, as well as lean protein can all help to promote joint repair and pain reduction. Alternatively, there are many foods which can exacerbate joint degradation, inflammation and pain which should be avoided.
These include:
- Refined carbohydrates which negate effective insulin metabolism, leading to weight gain and the promotion of inflammation
- Inadequate protein intake which limits tissue repair
- Foods rich in Omega 6 fatty acids (sunflower, canola, soy, corn oil)
- Alcohol and processed fast foods
- Nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, capsicum, paprika)

Clinical Evidence for the use of DONA Glucosamine
Two, 3-year long, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised studies have shown that the administration of DONA Glucosamine slows the progression of osteoarthritis (knee) in patients. According to the studies, patients who received the placebo experienced progressive joint space narrowing, representing further loss of cartilage. Those who received DONA Glucosamine showed no further loss of cartilage on average, therefore reducing the progression of osteoarthritis. The studies also found that it is well tolerated in the gut.
