Zelmac for IBS removed from market - 5th April 2007

Archived News >>

Zelmac (tegaserod) a synthetic pharmaceutical indicated for the management of IBS has been recalled throughout Australia today by the TGA. This follows the withdrawal of the product this week in the USA by the FDA after is was linked to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke in patients taking the drug.

For patients suffering from IBS this is yet another blow as IBS is difficult to treat and there are very few effective options available to patients.

However, patients who have until now been taking Zelmac can rest assured that there is at least one other clinically proven alternative available in Australia specifically indicated for IBS – a product called Iberogast. Iberogast is a clinically proven herbal treatment for relief from the symptoms of IBS and dyspepsia and has been in use in Germany for over 40 years.

Iberogast can be obtained from your naturopath, herbalist or behind the counter at selected pharmacies. For stockists of Iberogast please click Find a Practitioner and follow the prompts.
