This week, the enhancement of cognitive abilities through the use of evidence-based herbal medicines will be in the spotlight at the Second International Symposium about Pharmacology of Natural Products (FAPRONATURA 2009).
The conference will take place in Varadero, Cuba on the 3rd – 7th of June. It is organised by the Cuban Society of Pharmacology and will bring together international researchers and opinion leaders in the field of pharmacology of natural medicines.
“Fapronatura is a fantastic arena where the research work from world renowned scientists is presented alongside innovative works from often unknown researchers,” says Andrea Zangara, chair of the Symposium and Flordis International Business Development Manager.
Conference highlights will include the international launch of a special extract of the Indian plant Bacopa monnieri, KeenMind® (CDRI 08) at the Flordis sponsored special workshop on ‘The use of herbal extracts for neurocognitive enhancement’.
“The workshop will focus on the enhancement of cognitive abilities and the associated pharmacology of the clinically proven natural product KeenMind. This is one of the best examples of an evidence-based herbal medicine for mental enhancement in the world,” says Andrea Zangara.
KeenMind is the result of 30 years of meticulous research and development by the Indian government’s premiere research institute the Central Drug and Research Institute (CDRI). Research into Bacopa was first conducted in 1963, building on its long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine. Since this time, the CDRI has extensively researched the pharmacology of Bacopa to establish the best combination of the active components required to deliver a safe and effective product.
One of the main researchers involved in this Indian scientific exploration is Prof Hemant Singh,
ex-Deputy Director of the CDRI. Within the workshop Prof Singh will be presenting ‘Memory Enhancing Effect of Bacopa monnieri’.
Other eminent researchers in the field will give the following presentations:
- ‘Human Clinical Trails with the Indian Super Medicine Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi)’ by Professor Con Stough from the National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) and the Brain Sciences Institute, at Swinburne University, Australia.
- ‘Cognitive-Enhancing Effects of Ginkgo GK501 and Ginseng G115’ by Professor Andrew Scholey, National Institute of Complementary Medicine (NICM) Collaborative Reseach Centre in Neurocognition and Natural Medicines, Australia.
- ‘Panax ginseng (G115) improves aspects of working memory performance, mood in healthy young adults’ by Dr Jonathon Reay, Senior Lecturer of Psychopharmacology at Northumbria, UK.
- ‘Phytotherapeutics for Behavioural and Psychological Signs of Dementia’ by Dr Okello, Executive Director of the Medicine Plant Research Group, School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development at Newcastle University, UK.
