Sydney, 18 July, 2003: Unique Australian company, Flordis, supplier of clinically proven herbal medicines, is calling for Australian standards to be lifted to meet European criteria.

Countries such as Switzerland and Germany apply similar standards to herbal and pharmaceutical products, requiring comprehensive clinical studies and good manufacturing practices. Flordis products are manufactured to this high European standard of quality and efficacy and so, have not been affected by the TGA product recall.

Flordis Managing Director, Nigel Pollard says, “Consumers deserve safe products that actually work and there is no reason why Australian companies cannot deliver that. The challenge now is for the Australian complementary therapies industry to deliver clinically proven products like those sold by Flordis,” said Flordis Managing Director, Nigel Pollard.

In some European countries, medical doctors prescribe herbal medicines as well as pharmaceuticals and products like Flordis’s Remotiv are recommended more often than a drug like Prozac. Another Flordis herbal product, Tavonin, which is used to improve memory, was the number one prescribed medicine in continental Europe in the 1990s, with an estimated 30 million prescriptions written by doctors annually.

“We demand clinical data that demonstrates the finished product is of a high standard and works. These medicines are prescribed because the medical community is confident of the quality and effectiveness of the Flordis medicine,” said Mr Pollard.

In Australia, opinion leading specialists and GPs prescribe herbal products like Premular, Tavonin and Remotiv to treat specific disease states.

“We like to know where the seed came from, where it was planted, how it was harvested and what happened to it when it was processed. But most importantly, we demand the clinical data so our customers know what they are getting,” he said.
