Sinusitis
Do you suffer from some of the following symptoms?
- Headache
- Blocked nose
- Sinus pain and pressure
- Mucus discharge
If so, you may have sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinus mucous membranes. This condition can be acute (less than 3 weeks in duration) or chronic in nature. You should make an appointment to see a healthcare professional to discuss the causes of your symptoms, have appropriate investigations conducted and consider treatment options.
Any condition in which normal drainage of the sinuses is impeded may cause sinusitis. Acute inflammation of the nasal cavities as a result of an upper respiratory tract infection (cold/flu) or allergy may block the sinus openings. Acute sinusitis is usually caused by a number of bacteria. Swelling of the sinus lining may block drainage into the nasal cavity resulting in the sinus filling with mucus. Furthermore, the infection may spread to the lower respiratory tract or exacerbate pre-existing conditions like asthma. Chronic sinusitis may be a consequence of unresolved acute sinusitis and can give rise to ulceration and fibrosis.
There are many possibilities to assist you in managing these symptoms, including a specifically clinically proven herbal medicine called Sinupret Forte® prescribed by health care professionals. Click here for more information on Sinupret Forte.
Helpful hints
Increasing drainage of the sinuses is very important, therefore consider saline irrigation. This can be done by using a Neti pot, Sinus Rinse or sniffing saline into the nose from the palm of the hand, over the sink or bath.
Once the sinuses are open a facial sauna, vaporiser or steam inhalation may penetrate deeper into the sinuses reducing the mucus, hence aiding drainage. Adding one or two drops of an essential oil such as eucalyptus is also helpful.
Diet and lifestyle
Here are some recommendations which could help your symptoms:
- Reduce mucus forming foods, e.g. dairy products such as milk
- Reduce sugar intake
- Introduce pungent foods such as ginger, horseradish, garlic and onions into your diet
- Eat plenty of foods high in vitamin C (fruits and vegetables) and consider a vitamin C supplement
- Stop smoking and recreational drug usage
