Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis can be a painful condition involving inflammation and deterioration in the affected joints. The joints of the knees and hands are most often affected and the pain & stiffness experienced can range from mild to severe. Osteoarthritis becomes more common as people get older and is a result of the breakdown over time of the joints’ normal mechanisms of repair and remodeling.

Helpful hints

Exercise can help improve circulation and mobilisation of affected joints, especially swimming and other water-based exercises which do not put pressure on the joints. Your health care professional can advise you on other appropriate treatments & nutrients that can provide relief and slow down the degeneration of cartilage e.g. glucosamine sulphate and fish oils (omega 3 fatty acids). A balanced diet including fresh fruit and vegetables, 2-3 serves of oily fish and whole grains may also improve your health and wellbeing.

Avoid or lessen

Alcohol, caffeine, high amounts of red meat, processed and fried foods can all aggravate inflammation in body tissues.
