Insomnia
If you regularly have trouble sleeping and can’t identify anything in particular what is causing it, you are probably suffering from insomnia. Insomnia is the inability to sleep adequately. If you suffer from insomnia, it is likely that you feel tired during the day, have trouble concentrating and could feel irritable.
Insomnia is not harmful if it is only occasional, as the body can be revitalised by a few hours of extra sleep. Frequent insomnia however, may have negative effects on the other systems and functions of the body. As sleep is such an important part of a healthy lifestyle, it is really important that you are getting as much restorative sleep as you need.
Helpful Hints
Relax your mind before going to bed. Try listening to soothing music or do some light reading. Soak in a warm bath and possibly add some lavender oil.
Enjoy regular exercise (but not right before bedtime). If you can't get to sleep after 15-20 minutes, get out of bed and try doing something distracting like a crossword or puzzle.
Avoid or Lessen
The following things related to your diet and lifestyle could aggravate your symptoms:
- caffeine - found in coffee and cola drinks
- other brain stimulants consumed after 4pm (e.g. alcohol and sweet foods)
- heavy or large meals before going to bed as it’s harder to sleep with a full stomach
- watching television or reading in bed
If you are suffering from insomnia, ask your practitioner about ReDormin.
